Novice to Rogue Guide

This guide is intended to help new players walk through the transition from novice to thief to rogue. For a new player it may be hard for them to figure out where to go at first for a job change and then what to do, this should help answer some questions.

Credits

Thanks go out to all of those who have posted their trials and tribulations on the road to becoming a rogue. Most of this information has been gathered from the forums here at roempire.com. Special thanks go out to Lanes for his in depth information on WOE rogues when they weren’t yet available on Chaos or Loki.

Thief Personality Test

When you first join Ragnarok you are placed in the “newbie zone”. From here you will get acquainted with Ragnarok. I am not going to go into detail about much of this except the answers to the personality test to become a thief.

Here are the answers:

First part of the test, Choose the word that best describes you.
1.Independent
2.Change
3.Consumer
4.Swift
5.Experience
6.Reality
Second part of the test, Answer yes or no.
1.No
2.No
3.No
4.No
5.Yes
6.Yes
7.No
8.No
Third part of the test, Choose the best answer.
1.Irritated
2.Regret after buying
3.If I have to
4.Alone
5.Ignore it
6.Congressman
7.What brand
8.Change subjects
9.Not get it.
At this point you will be transported to Morroc to begin your life as a novice in Morroc destined to be a thief. Congratulations.

Life as a novice.

As a novice you should start out with a small subsidy, a knife, and clothes. You are going to want to upgrade your weapon as soon as possible. You should begin by going north to Moc_fild07 and start killing Picky’s. Kill only Picky’s and Picky Eggs for the first few levels, after that start taking on Drops and possibly Condors, beware the Condors can still kill you pretty easy if you don’t have a decent attack power. This should depend on your build.

Pick up everything in sight. You need zeny badly. The object here is to save up enough zeny to purchase your first Main Gauche. The earlier you can get a MG the better. It is also a good idea to try to get Play Dead and First Aid. First Aid is a life saver for a young thief.

First Aid Quest:

You must get this while you are still a Novice otherwise it will not be available.
Required job level 3 Novice.

What you need:
1.3 Red Herb
2.3 Clover
3.Sterilized Bandage (you get this during the quest)
Talk to Nami, he is located in the Hotel in Prontera. He will tell you to gather these items for the quest. Once you have spoken with Nami you will need to go speak to the Nurse in the Castle. The Nurse is located on the eastern upstairs floor of the castle. Talk to the Nurse, he will give you the bandage (it doesn’t show up in your inventory). Return to Nami with all of the quest items in your inventory and he will teach you the skill.

Play Dead Quest:

This skill will only work while you are a novice.
Required job level 7 Novice.

What you need:
1.Novice Name Tag (you get the item during the quest)
Talk to Blma, he is located in the Prontera Chivalry (northwest corner of prontera, where you get the culverts access). He will tell you to go get the Novice Name Tag. He gives you a time limit of ten minutes so be fast about doing it. (you can retry if you fail) Talk to the Nurse in the castle again, he will give you the Novice Name Tag. Return to Blma in the time frame and he will teach you the Play Dead skill.

Novice Life Continued…

Try to use First Aid as much as possible rather than using potions which are expensive. Kill Drops and Picky Eggs, they drop Apples and Red Potions to heal you as well. Remember your main objective is to get a Main Gauche as soon as possible. Once you have your Main Gauche which may not be until after your job change to Thief you will want to start saving money up to Plus your weapon. (more on that later)

Thief Job Change

Well, you made it. This can be a little tricky for a novice to get through. Once you have made it to job level 10 Novice you can change to the thief job class. This means you are going to need to go to the Pyramids.

To get to the Pyramids go northwest in Morroc to the exit to moc_ruins. From there you will go northwest again to get to the Pyramids. There is normally a large ammount of people here and more often then not someone there to help novices get to the Thieves Guild. Don’t worry if there isn’t anyone there to help you, it shouldn’t be too difficult. The entrance to the Thieves Guild is in the center of the map in the maze. When you enter the Pyramid you will basically want to travel northwest until you reach the center of the map, there you should see stairs going down. Go down the stairs and travel south until you get to the crossroads, go west (left) and enter the portal, this is the Thieves Guild. Talk to the Thief Guide there and answer the questions. The Thief Guide will ask you to go to the Farm and retrieve some mushrooms to prove your worth.

Figure 1

The Farm.

The Farm is located on the moc_ruins map. When you exit the Pyramid after leaving the Thieves Guild the way you came you will travel east and slightly south. You are looking for Mr. Irrelevant 142,124. Once you find him he will let you in to the Farm. You will be trying to get a score of 25. Net Mushrooms are worth 3 and Orange Gooey Mushrooms are worth 1. Try not to die in here as you will have to repeat the whole scenario again. Everything except the Spores is agro in here so be aware. Once you have the right number of mushrooms return to the guild and talk to the Thief Guide again, she’ll tell you to talk to the other guy next to her, Comrade. He will do some weird calculations and then make you a thief. Congratulations.

The Life of a Thief

As a thief you'll have access to many new skills. The thief is a very versatile class, there are probably more builds for a thief than any other class as they can use all of the stats to a major advantage depending on the build. You'll want to start aquiring new equipment at this point that is crucial to your build. Plussing weapons adds damage and a better chance to hit the monster, you'll want to make sure you pus your weapons and armor in this game. To plus weapon you'll need to go to a "town" blacksmith in one of the towns and purchase the correct upgrade material. (the town blacksmith will tell you what you need for the weapon or armor. For more information please read up on it in the blacksmith forums) Weapons and other equipment will be covered in the builds. I'll review the builds later, now we'll go over the skills.

Thief Skills:

Becoming a Rogue

Once you have reached job level 40 you will be able to change into a Rogue. The Rogue job test can be quite difficult so we'll do a quick walk through.

To change to a rogue you will have to go to the Paros Lighthouse (cmd_fild07) to get there go to Comodo and speak to the Kafra (196,149). You can teleport from there to the lighthouse. You will need to take the portal in the lighthouse (197,117) down a few stories and speak with the Rogue Guildsman. She will ask you ten questions. If you pass you will need to go up to the next floor. Speak with Mr. Smith. He will tell you to go collect items there are several different sets of items required.

He will give you a password in his clue. Make sure you write this password down as syntax is extremely important.

Once you have made it inside you will be asked if you are ready to enter to maze. (it's not really a maze just a long unmapped tunnel) The monsters in this tunnel are not very nice and are well beyond your ability to kill. Make good use of the hide skill and keep close to the wall. (the wall helps as they don't spawn right on top of you) If you make it through you will be transported back to Rogues guild, talk to the Rogue Guide again and ... Congratulations, you are a Rogue!!

Equipment for a thief and rogue.

Rogue depend on two things very heavilly, Daggers and Bucklers. I'll list a few daggers and bucklers here. Equipment is going to be based on the build however so do not consider this a be all end all of equipment for a rogue. This is just a sampling of the equipment a dagger rogue might use. I will leave out bow equipment as I am not familiar with them, if someone wants to post their preferences or send me some information I will gladly add it.

Daggers
Rogues use two types of dagger, elemental damascus and 3 slotted gladius. A 4 slotted Main Gauche is not in the rogues best interest. When it comes to elemental Damascus', get all four types. You can buy an elemental damascus
for 1.2 mil or higher depending on the upgrade or over-upgrade. (overupgrade is plussing it beyond the safe point). 3 slotted Gladius' should go for 225k to 275k a piece on Chaos. You are going to want to slot these with damage enhancing cards for monster element type, monster size, and monster type. For example: A Punk has an elemental weakness to Earth, is considered a "small" type monster, and is a plant type monster. You could elect to use an Earth Damascus, an Triple Scorpion Carded Gladius (3 scorpion cards, do more damage to plant monsters), a Double Scorpion Desert Wolf Gladius ( 2 scorpion cards and a desert wolf card, desert wolf card does more damage to small monsters), A Triple Hurricane Gladius(andre carded, adds 20 to the attack), or any number of other combinations. The idea is to do the most damage to the type of monster you are battling as fast as possible.

Bucklers
Along with dealing damage you will want to reduce the damage you take. Let's examine the Minorus for the buckler, they a considered a brute monster. For reducing damage against a brute (race) monster you would want a buckler slotted with an Orc Warrior Card. This buckler will reduce 30% of the damage from Brute type monsters.

There are tons of combinations but I hope this gives you an idea of how specialized the equipment a rogue carries around will be. Most rogues will carry a variety of weapons to fight a varied array of monsters, you will have to decide what type of equipment you need based on your build.

Builds

I am going to post build types here. I would like as many submissions as possible for each build from the roempire populace. I'll list the type of rogue and let you all submit builds for them as replies. I'll then try to add the well thought out ones to the guide itself so we can come up with the most comprehensive novice to rogue guide out there. I will also be adding images for people to help locate certain special npcs.

Please, lets have fun submitting all of these builds and having them on one comprehensive thread.

I can add builds for Gankster and Hybrid Stripper but I would like to see others as well.

Agi/Dex Stripper Hybrid
Build Courtesy of Jacquain.

Artanis says: This build is a viable pvm/woe stripper. Jacquain is taking a risk by not maxing sword mastery but this build should still survive in pvm fairly well. This build is not going to be a great WOE build but would be welcomed in many guilds for the assistance in PVM and MVP.

Str: 54+6
Agi: 89+8
Vit 45+5
Int 5+7
Dex 72+18
Luc 1

Basic order:
I started out with 9's in str/agi/dex, bumped str and dex to 28 then pump agi to at least 50. A decent dagger is required (I had a +5 double hurricane stiletto. It does the trick) but it can solo, especialy once the flee kicks in, at least up to rogue.

The plan now is to push str until I hit my goal then work on agi/dex. Vit comes later while those last int points will probably come after job level 48 (the last int bonus).

Skills, in order:
Thief (Job 41)
10 Double attack -Up that damage first
10 Improve dodge -flee should be kicking in by now
10 Steal -of course
10 Hiding
(My own build actualy has 3 hiding, 6 envenom. Now I wish I had more hiding. Drop hide to 9 if you want to change at 40)

Rogue
4 Sword Mastery -leveling aid
10 Gank -to claim your Ganking rights
1 Stalk - to aid in backstab later on
4 Mug -prereq
10 Backstab - pvm aid
20 Divest - Last because WOE won't be for a while

Standard carded Gladius selection and bucklers along with an elemental Damascus. Jacquain says he is going to be using the following eq:
unupgraded quad dex knife (the 'ganker', to be used when I wish to gank)
Artanis says: This would also be a good idea for WOE
Apple of archer
Slotted muffler (Ray in WOE, Whisper for pvm)
2 Nimble gloves
Green boots
Padded armor (NO clue of proper cards)
Euridite sunglasses
Slotted guard (Thara frog?)
Hoodlum (paints graffiti) (fun builds with graffiti)

Gankster (PVM gank Rogue)
Build 1
Gankster

Build by Artanis
This is quite possibly the most popular Rogue build out there. Of course each person is going to have their own variation to it this should cover the general basics. There are three types of Gankster. One of the types I have never seen before but could be quite the money maker. The build would be considered a Mugger by all standards.

Rogues are probably the most versatile class available. I mean let’s face it what other class can: use bows or daggers, can use four different stats as their main stat, use merchant dc skills, hide and move, strip equipment, and steal automatically.. all at the same time???. This is why rogues are fast becoming one of the most popular builds. You can make a rogue who is geared towards WOE, PVP, PVM, and MVP. You can also build hybrid rogues without sacrificing nearly as much as other hybrid builds for other classes.

The true Dagger Gankster (some people use a bow but, considering you must be in melee combat for gank a bow seems to be on the low end of a gank build)

*melee combat = no long ranged attacks

Level 99 stats (no eq)

Str 56+6 62
Agi 83+7 90
Vit 36+5 41
Int 32+4 36
Dex 73+7 80
Luk 1+0 1

Now I know that I didn’t hit Vit or Strength right on the best possible number but, both of these stats have a bonus for each point put in them.

As a Novice and Thief you will probably want to pump Agi, Dex, and Strength. The reason for this is that Agi is your main defensive stat, you need Dex to hit the monsters, and you need Strength to actually kill them. I would start by getting all 3 stats to 11.

This begins with all 3 main stats at 11.

Agi 20
Dex 20
Str 20
Agi 40
Str 30
Agi 60
Dex 40
Str 40
Vit 20
Agi 70
Dex 60
Int 14
Agi 83
Vit 35
Dex 73
Str 54
Int 32
Str 56
Vit 36

The first thing you will want to do is get either a Main Gauche or a Blade. The reason for the blade is they are cheap, do good damage for a low level weapon, and are very cheap and easy to upgrade. Upgrading weapons is probably the most overlooked thing by new players. The affect on the game play is tremeandous. Trust me upgrade all of your weapons as soon as you get them. I like to try and start my novices out with a +7 Blade, then most on to either a triple Dextrous +6 or 7 Main Gauche or a Triple Shrewd MG. I say these weapons as they are easily accessable to new players and easy to make. (the cards are cheap)
Spend some time in the culverts. This place is a godsend to new players as there are tons of spawns and the exp moves very fast. As a thief to be rogue I would work on maxings Improve Dodge and Double Attack right away. Once those have been maxed start maxing steal.. Here’s why.. Once you have one level of steal, and you have been collecting Iron Ore in culverts you can go to gef_fild09. Here you can fight Ambernites and Hornets. Hornets are awesome because there is a chance you can get a 4 slotted Main Gauche, Honey, or a Wind of Verdure. Ambernites have a chance to drop Iron Ore, Rough Elu, and Crystal Blues. The real reason you are here is to farm Red Bloods from Red Mushrooms. Use steal on them until you get a successful steal, then kill them and collect the loot. It shouldn’t take long to get 10 or 20 Red Bloods. This will help you make your first Elemental Weapon.. A Fire Stiletto or MG. From here go kill anything that hates fire, heck you can even start to think about Hodes soon.
Once you have maxed Steal, start working on Hiding. Take hiding to level 9 as we don’t really care about getting it to level 10 and forget about Envenom unless you want to go to Job level 50.

During this time it is also a good idea to start collecting the elements for your weapons. If you end up buying your weapons sell these elements to a needy Forger and you’ll get rich quick. Good things to farm include ****MUSHROOMS**** they don’t fight back and drop Red Bloods (red shrooms) and Crystal Blues (black shrooms) . You can find several Black Mushrooms In Geffen Dungeon while fighting Poison Spores.

Once you hit Rogue you’ll want to start maxing Sword Mastery and Gank. From there ignore the Divest Skills unless you really want a WOE Hybrid. As for the rest of the skills that is purely up to you and your style of play.

Build 2

This build is purely for PVM and gank. Gankster and PVm builds tend to have a moderately high Dex and a high strength, though strength can be sacrificed to extend the time frame for ganking.

Hybrid Stripper (vit/dex stripper non bow using)
Build 1
This build takes advantage of VIT and improve dodge to level. The vit has another bonus of being your primary source of defense in WOE. It should be noted that this build is not an easy solo build. I am personally doing it solo but I also have nice equipment to help me along. If you are planning on such a build (hybrid rogue) you will need to consider the early difficulty if you do not have assistance from friends or a guild.

Here is where the build gets to be more of a personal preference. If you want to get to WOE as fast as possible you'll need to pump DEX as soon as you can without hurting your characters ability to survive PVM and still make decent experience.

Thief

Improve Dodge 10
Double Attack 10
Steal 10
Hiding 9 (if you wish to go to level 50 then get envenom, detoxify isn't worth spending points on considering the number of hotkeys you will be using, just use green pots)

Stalk 1

Build 2 (Gormenghast)

meh basically exactly the same as my hunter build since its a pure bower. It falls under a WOE strip bow rogue category and unless people acctualy want to know what equips I plan to use I wont tell.
Skills

Skills!
20:Strip/Divest skills(The build practically is named after this skill.Very handy against knights, assasins and crusaders.)
10:vultures eyes(Basic bow skill)
10: Double strafe(Basic bow skill)
4:Snatcher(pre-req for strip skills)
2:Steal coin(pre-req for strip skills)
3:Tunnel Drive(Important one here. The ability to walk up to your target invisible.Watch out for sight and ruwach and the occasianal detection though)

Equips(you basically want more dex increasing equips here.Rogues get less dex bonus that hunters.)

My rogue wore
Spike Band(Best substituted with a AoA)

Blinker(anything here)

R.Leaf(anything here)

+8 double hydra kakkung(handy in WOE.Pack a lot of damage there.)

+8 Quadruple Savage babe Composite bow(Secodary weapon.Mainly to stun.I use this when against hunters.Hopefully you can stun them before they can return fire.)

+4 Chain mail(It be better to have a hard chain mail due to the hp rogues get.Id prefer a pupa card to a rocker card cause its 700hp for 1 dex.)

Immune Muffler(Very Handy in WOE/PvP)

Sohee Boots(Best card here would be a matyr card instead of a sohee because you get 10% extra hp over some sp recovery.Verit cards are a choice but get a matyr card here)

2ea.Zerom Clip(The best possible equipment here is a zerom glove.)

(Going in PvP or WOE you will need a lot of potions due to a rogues hp.The exra 50 vit helps increase potions healing potential.)

Doesent get more detail(well for me) that this when you want something outta me.

PVM/MVP Bow Rogue
Original Build by -=[dobby]=-

Bow Rogue..hmm im not sure..but i think this stats are ok

Base Level: 99
Status Pts: 0
STR: 54 + 6
AGI: 90 + ( not sure )
VIT: 24 + ( not sure )
INT: 1 + ( not sure )
DEX: 83 + 7
LUK: 1" + ( not sure )

start ur stat with
5 dex
5 vit
9 agi
9 str

the str is for using dagger , good when ur hunting items. and having 60 str , the bonus would add on even when ur using bow . since its damage bonus( not sure will work on iro ...works on sakray swt ) and 90 dex with bonus good with ur min damage too.

the vit are for pvp ovbiously . but this build is more focused on PvM and MvP . if you ever go into pvp , tunnel dive , backstab..thats if u manage to hide or not just resort to double strafe.

the skill you must get is

10 vulture eyes
10 double strafe
4 gank
4 mug
10 backstab
5 tunnel dive

the rest is then up to u . but i would suggest raid though..handy when mobbed .or not u can always max gank , more chance of auto steal wont hurt.
Artanis says: This build seems to be a hybrid bow rogue. I would think that the build stats could also be converted over to a WOE rogue very easilly. I would consider sightless mind a second option compared to maxing gank or pumping sword mastery to make it a true hybrid.

INTimidator (exactly what it sounds like)

Plagiarist (exactly what it sounds like)

Tanker (sits there and takes on anybody because of flee and vit)

Scout (can take the lead point but needs support)
